Hi there ... my name is Andy and I want everyone to know that its Adopt a Senior Pet Month. I've been lucky and found my Forever Home, but there are still some of my buddies who are waiting for someone smart enough to appreciate the Zen of a senior pet. |
|
They don't come much more Zen than my pal Benson The folks at East Coast German Shepherd Rescue say that this grreat guy gets along well with everyone he meets ... kids, cats and other dogs. |

Or take my new pal Clank . He's not very happy because he just doesn't understand how he wound up at S.H.A.I.D ... when the only thing rusty about him is his purr. |
|
And then there's my pal, Smokey who spent his whole life tied outside on a chain. He spent so many years without ever having enough love, so now he's making up for lost time. The TLC Animal Shelter want someone in his new family to be home all day so that Smokey never has to be so lonely again. Ever. |

And then there is my new buddy Casper ... her people moved away and "forgot" to bring her along ... so she wound up at S.H.A.I.D At Eleven she's really only middle aged and could have years of love and loyalty to offer a more reliable human. |
|
Or take my buddy Bruin. He spent his whole life with the same family and its not his fault that he never had a chance to find out how much fun it is to hang out with other dogs. So East Coast German Shepherd Rescue are looking for someone patient enough to help this grreat guy adjust to such a big change.

And then there is my sweet little Penney. Her human has to go into a nursing home and she is not allowed to go with him. Some folks think that there must be something wrong with homeless pets, but the truth is that none of use packed our bags and left. We didn't change .. it was our humans that changed. |
|
If visitors to the Metro Shelter knew what an easy life it can be to adopt a senior pet, they wouldn't keep walking past NuNu to see the younger models. We are old enough and wise enough to really be grateful for a second chance. Great news! NuNu is adopted! |

One of the biggest myths about animal rescue is that there is something wrong with pets in rescue. The truth is that many pets wind up in need because something has happened to their human .... like my new buddy Tia ... Her owner is becoming too ill and is hoping that P.E.T. PROJECTS will help her find a loving home where her old friend can spend the rest of her years in safety and dignity |
|
Then there is my new pal, Logan. People always assume that senior pets are slow and sedate ... but the truth is that this grreat guy has a ton of energy and NS Labrador Rescue want his new family to be able to keep up to HIM. |

And of course, then there is my new sweetheart. Josephina . She has been patiently waiting at the Metro Shelter for a kindred spirit who will appreciate the peaceful companionship she has to offer. |
|
Take Trilby , for instance. Like most of us, she's already housetrained ... and she likes a good night's sleep as much as you do. Great News!!! Trilby has been adopted !!! |

Or take Jazz. He's still trying to figure out why his owner repaid ten years of love and devotion by dropping him off Valley Animal Shelter. People just don't understand that a ten year old cat can have years and years of love and loyalty to offer. More great news - Jazz has been adopted!!! |
|
Or take my new friend Lily ... she may be older and wiser, but she still can't figure out why her owner wanted to repay twelve years of love and devotion by putting her aside. She is so full of spunk and so well behaved that P.E.T. PROJECTS can't figure it out either. Grrreat News! Lily has been adopted!!! |

And then there are these two friends.... Adara and her buddy Desi, they've lived together for their whole lives and are the best of friends. Lucky for them the LA Animal Shelter is looking for someone whose heart is big enough to adopt them both together. Not everyone understands how closely pets can bond .... its sad enough for them to be grieving for their human and they shouldn't have to grieve for each other too. Grrreat News! Adara and Desi have been adopted!!!!! |

All of my buddies have a story or two to tell, but these three fellows are part of a group that East Coast German Shepherd Rescue calls the Georgia Four. Grrreat News! Chauncey and Max and Shep have been adopted! They came all the way up from Georgia by an Underdog Railroad network of volunteers. I overheard my human muttering about how they all narrowly avoided something she calls a Gas Chamber ( and lots of other words a well behaved fellow like myself just can't use in public ) Everyone is betting that with such a lovely thick coat, Chauncey , pictured at top, is really going to enjoy our Canadian weather! My buddy, Max , is as full of beans as I am and just loves to play. Not all senior pets are sedate, eh? He's still a little thin because his human couldn't afford to feed him anymore ... which is why she gave him up. And sweet Shep , might not be the next agility star, but he can promise lots of loyalty and love and kisses for someone looking for a gentle and quiet friend. A lot of senior pets wind up knocking on Heaven's door because there are still too many people working in AC and shelters who think that nobody will want to adopt them. We might not all be Olympic athletes, but I we are all champions at adjusting to change. |

My name is Andy and I can tell you from first hand experience that we second hand seniors make the very best friends. When my new Mom brought me home, I knew how to make friends with her two big dogs and her six kitties ... even the eldercat that the young dogs call Miss Crankypants. I slept through the night from the very first and learned the new routine in a couple of days. Nobody had to housetrain me. Nobody had to get up in the middle of the night to take me out. More importantly, nobody had to tell me to be grateful ..... because I am old enough and wise enough to understand that already. Nobody had to adopt me either ... and I love my human all the more because she understands the Zen of an older gentleman like myself. |
