Breed Rescues

Do purebreds come into Rescue?  You bet.   Like any other pet, they are innocent bystanders who are often left in the lurch when their human's lives change.   Nova Scotia has several wonderful breed rescue groups and also has many Regional Contacts for  National Breed Rescue Groups.

What can you expect when you apply to adopt a pet from a reputable Nova Scotia Breed Rescue ?

  • You will need to fill out an adoption application
  • Personal references will be required
  • They will want the name of your vet and contact information for their animal clinic
  • You'll be asked about the pets you have now, as well as the ones you have had in the past
  • Yes ... they will ask about your living accommodations and whether you own or rent
  • Most will probably ask what you feed your pets and where your pets sleep

So why would anyone want to go to all that trouble?

  • Breed rescues offer a wealth of experience with the breed and can offer practical breed specific suggestions and advice,
  • your new best friend will be vet checked and vaccinated and spayed or neutered,
  • known health issues are not swept under the rug,
  • any behavior issues will be fully disclosed
  • follow up advice and support is available,
  • if things aren't a success for any reason,  you will not have to wonder what to do .... the pet must be returned to the rescue, and
  • its just frosting on the cake that when you adopt from a Breed Rescue, your compassion can also be much easier on your checkbook than purchasing a purebred from even a backyard breeder.

In other words .... reputable rescues make every effort to match the right pet to the right human so that the relationship can last a lifetime.  The free online ad sites, pet stores and backyard breeders can only offer a curbside guarantee and often offer unnecessary heartache and expense to pet owners.
