How to Make a Difference

“I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do"              Helen Keller

What a wonderful thing that we don't have to wait to win the lottery to make a difference for Homeless Pets.

There are many meaningful ways for one person to make a difference:

Foster parents are the lifeblood of every rescue group and shelter.   Don't worry if you can't commit for long periods of time .. there is always a need for someone who can fill in for a few days too!

Volunteer at your local shelter.   If you can walk a dog, brush a cat or even just answer a phone they can always use the help.    Think you might be too busy?  If you can spare thirty minutes a week they can still use your help
Good desktop publishing skills are always in demand.  From posters for adoptables to building brochures,  these skills can be put to good use by any group and will really help get the word out there
Have a party with a twist.  Instead of gifts for your birthday or anniversary, ask your guests to make a donation of either money or supplies to your favourite rescue
Be a bride with a conscience and offer your guests a little card or token to let them know that in lieu of favours you have made a donation to your favourite animal rescue.   If you are settled enough to already have all the toasters and dishes you need, it would be very meaningful to ask your guests to donate to your favourite rescue in lieu of a gift.
If you have a blog or a website, put a link for your favourite rescue on the sidebar.  Or you can go to the Petfinder Download Center and get a free customized pet list or featured pet module , such as the ones you see throughout this site.
Is there a new baby in the family or the neighbourhood?    So many good dogs are surrendered, abandoned and killed because everyone knits but noone thinks to offer to walk the dog until the new parents settle into the new routine.
Not ready to adopt?  Then Sponsor the Spay or Neuter for a pet at your favourite rescue.   Or if you're feeling really generous, sponsor the whole kit and caboodle of health check and vaccines too.
Make up a nice basket full of goodies to raffle off for your favourite rescue.  You will probably find that the animal clinic that provides the vet support will be more than happy to put the basket on the counter and may even sell the tickets for you.
Talk ... talk ... talk.   Never underestimate the power of word of mouth.  Talk to your friends and family about your favourite rescue whenever you see opportunities in the conversation.
Be a good example.  Take good care of your own pets and make sure they are spayed and neutered.   Let your friends and neighbours see how much fun it is to have the companionship of a good pet
Last but not least, adopt your next Best Friend from a Rescue Group , Breed Rescue, the Nova Scotia SPCA, TNR Groups or Animal Control.
